‘I knew Cassie Snodsbury’s sins would find her out one day,’ the Dowager asserted after Thea and Marcus had used the special licence burning a hole in his pocket and they were sharing a celebratory bottle of champagne.

‘Did you, ma’am?’ Marcus replied blandly as he looked down at their entwined hands and the gold wedding band on Thea’s finger.

‘I know what you’re thinking, you ungrateful boy,’ her ladyship replied, ‘but my sins harmed nobody. Some of the parties concerned enjoyed ’em far too much, if the truth be known.’

‘No doubt they did,’ Marcus replied with an elegant bow and a sly glance at the fine portrait of her ladyship in the full bloom of her youth and scandalous glory over the mantelpiece.

Wondering if her wedding breakfast was to be enlivened by an account of her hostess’s more spectacular misdeeds, Thea’s laughter faded the instant the sound of Lady Winforde’s strident voice was heard below. Nick stepped forward as a red-faced Sir Granby Winforde and his puffing mama barged into the room.
